October 2, 2013 / The Factory – 38 W. Fulton Suite 400 – Downtown GR / 6pm
The West Michigan Public Relations Society of America is continuing a program called, Mentor Hub for business professionals to offer career counsel, knowledge, and wisdom to those students from local colleges and universities looking to make their career in communications.
October 2, 2013 will kick-off with an event that will entertain a unique start to pairing mentors and mentees.
This event will allow potential mentors and mentees to be acquainted before being paired after the event. Mentors do not need to be members of WMPRSA, but must work in the communications field in order to participate.
NOT SURE YOU WANT TO BE A MENTOR?
This event does not bind you to becoming a mentor. Simply attend this free event, and if it’s not your style just say, “No thanks.” Invite your friends to check it out with you; it’s less scary that way.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT
The night will start with networking, and quickly move on to a ‘bio auction’ where mentors will be introduced in game show-style with information from their resume, including current and past professional experiences, and hobbies. We might just say, “Come on down!”
From there, a speed dating set-up will allow mentors and mentees to have 2 minutes of face-time where they can become more acquainted.
Finally, mentees will have the opportunity to write down three mentor names they would choose to have as a mentor, descending in priority.
I WANT TO BE A MENTOR
If after the event, you decide you want to be a mentor, congrats! You will be paired with 1-3 mentees and at least one other mentor that you will work with side-by-side. You aren’t alone in this. You don’t need prior experience in mentoring; you just need to share your experiences. Once you are matched up with your mentees and co-mentor(s), we will provide contact info for all involved, and then it is your job to set up dates and times with the group. We understand that sometimes you cannot make a meeting, and sometimes your co-mentor(s) won’t be able to make it. Back each other up so the mentees have someone to meet with. Work together.
I DON’T WANT TO BE A MENTOR
That’s okay! Your registration and attendance to the mixer doesn’t commit you to become a mentor. If you attend and it isn’t your style, you can simply say, “No thanks.”
